Pain management with over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or naproxen sodium (Aleve) may help manage pain from avascular necrosis. There are prescription-strength NSAIDs available. Osteoporosis medications. These medications could potentially slow the progression of avascular necrosis, though again evidence is mixed.

Rest. Limiting activity or using crutches for several months would help in maintaining off-weight from the joint and hence slowing the bone damage. Exercises. A physiotherapist can instruct exercises to help maintain or gain range of motion at the joint level. Electrical stimulation. Electric currents can stimulate the body to create new bone to fill the destroyed area. Electrical stimulation can be used in the operating room as a treatment administered locally over the damaged site, or it can be given intramuscularly or intravenously via electrodes applied to the skin surface.
